More images from my recent foray through the neighbourhood…including someone prepping for dinner.

: Was trying to get some nice colour in the background

: Never could manage to get the focus right as the wind blew the web back and forth

: Such magnificence on a simple petal

: But this was definitely the better angle for details

: Didn’t even see the lady bug when I lined up the shot

: No actual critters, but loved the prism effect in the bright sunshine

: Bees are holding strong as the weather changes

: First time I’ve ever managed a photo of a spider prepping dinner

Some of the critters I met while wandering the side streets and gardens of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).

: Another new bee for my photo collection

: Not sure why the piggy back…don’t think it’s the typical excuse

: Still can’t figure out how those wings get that bee into the air

: Not too much longer before even the thistles stop blooming

: A little lady bug walks on the underside

: Tried to blue it up a little, but it just got muddier

: Only the second monarch I’ve captured this year

Crunchies in a ravine

You had to know these were coming…more creepy crawly crunchies from my recent walk through the woods.

: Faced with such small petals, the bumbles steps were quite tentative

: I was going for the thin layer of slime holding it to the leaf

: Another wasp looking for a bit of wood pulp, no doubt to repair a nest

: Another menacing creature crawling from the darkness

: It often amazes me how agile these creatures are for their bulk

Discovering some new trails in my area of Toronto, I came upon some interesting neighbours.

: A lady bug travels a withered leaf past a tick waiting for a new host

: Among the thistles, a lady bug takes a moment

: I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this species of hornet (wasp?) before

: Took me a while to realize there are two millipedes in this photo

: A small fly gives thanks to a passing bird for…well…passing

: The kilometer long fence played host to dozens of spiders

: You had to know there would be at least one bee photo

: A moment’s rest from a day of flight

: Checking out the railing for some nesting materials

: The wasp had carved a line several cm long in the railing

Not just bee-ches

I appreciate some of you might be getting sick of seeing bees, so let me up the ante with a few other creepy crawlies from my recent walk-about.

: A big year for flying ants, it would seem

: This fellow’s shadow was more menacing than he

: Almost camouflaged by the brown flower, the beetle hunkers down

: Will have to see if I can figure out what kind of beetle this is

: It almost looks like her head is about to fall off

: Love the flash of light off her compound eyes

: The bee might have met her match with the cactus

: So happy this image turned out well; such majesty

: The veins on the dragonfly’s wings are so delicate and yet carry his about easily

: Not an insect, I know, but a nice dose of serenity

Flying stingie thingies (and a snail)

What better way to celebrate Canada Day than to wander the great outdoors? So that’s exactly what I did.

These are the insects…less creepy crawly to come soon.

: Worked on my flight shots today

: Many of the bumbles looked like they were wearing leggings

: Something said don’t mess with these winged fellows

: Bumbles were out in full force today

: The contrast between the flowers and the bumble was impressive

: I’ve never seen one that looks quite like this…mostly red

: These flowers were amazingly bright

: The bumbles were quite active, so I had a few chances at these photos

: Two bugs in one for this photo

: No idea what this little guy is

: The ants are pretty big this year

: Bumbles weren’t the only bees taking flight today

Errand air alike

Early yesterday, I had an errand to run that would involve a 45-minute round trip walk, so I decided to take my camera.

Annoyingly, the subject of my errand was not available when I got there (ironically, a photograph) but my little walk ended up being a 2-hour tour of the area.

Over the next couple of days, I will post a selection of the photos taken, but here’s the first batch: The birds and the bugs.

: Someone had dropped popcorn in a crevice in a tree.

: Happy with the clarity of this photo

: Was hoping somebody would pop their head out, but I think this is home to one of the many groundhogs in the area

: One of the first butterflies I have seen this very late Spring

: The first time a fly has ever stayed still long enough to have its picture taken

: The redwinged blackbirds really didn’t want to have their photo taken

: One of them stood still long enough, but even this involved crawling through bush

: This little gal had something in her foot that was causing no end of trouble

: And then she got distracted with her wing plummage
