The Upside of Down

As I examined the photos I took the other day walking the waterfront of Toronto’s east end, I realized that much of my world was apparently upside-down. See for yourself.

: Nestled within the canopy of a conifer, this fellow was looking for lunch

: Was really happy with the detail on this image

: Found the myriad crows hard to photography on sunny days as they are nothing but contrast

: Taking a break from the sun under the shade of water plants

: Mom and just one of her ducklings swimming through a hotel pond

: A moment’s libation at a bird bath filled with rubber ducks

These were some of the amazing winged creatures I met while traveling through Kona-Kailua, Hawaii about 18 months ago.

: This little guy looked so miserable on the rocks and yet, he’s in Hawaii, how bad can life be

: Shorebirds were constantly in search of delectable edibles

: Every time I look at this photo, I find yet another bird I didn’t see previously

: The flash of red stands out amidst the bleached rocks

: These little guys were everywhere and were ever so patient with the photographer

: He seemed to be as curious about me as I about him

: And upon realizing I wasn’t dangerous, he went back to snacking

Waterfront birds

Another sunny day and another errand can mean only one thing: another day traipsing around with the camera.

A few more scenery shots than usual–different lens–but this first batch is dedicated to the most fowl of Lake Ontario.

: The cormorants were quite active today

: The geese weren’t sure whether to avoid me or see if I had food

: Not as clear as I might have liked, but I enjoy the movement

: The mallard drake preens as the female sits quietly in the distance

: The female seemed quite content to ignore her partner’s vainglorious efforts

: The great thing about shooting over water is the opportunity for amazing reflections

: Coming in for a tete-a-tete, the resting swift waits

: The tiny swift sits patiently, watching its family swoop across the inlet

: …and eventually the cormorant manages to take wing

Errand air alike

Early yesterday, I had an errand to run that would involve a 45-minute round trip walk, so I decided to take my camera.

Annoyingly, the subject of my errand was not available when I got there (ironically, a photograph) but my little walk ended up being a 2-hour tour of the area.

Over the next couple of days, I will post a selection of the photos taken, but here’s the first batch: The birds and the bugs.

: Someone had dropped popcorn in a crevice in a tree.

: Happy with the clarity of this photo

: Was hoping somebody would pop their head out, but I think this is home to one of the many groundhogs in the area

: One of the first butterflies I have seen this very late Spring

: The first time a fly has ever stayed still long enough to have its picture taken

: The redwinged blackbirds really didn’t want to have their photo taken

: One of them stood still long enough, but even this involved crawling through bush

: This little gal had something in her foot that was causing no end of trouble

: And then she got distracted with her wing plummage

Sunny Toronto – Part Two – Critters

Not a ton of animal photos from this trip as my interest was more beach, people and places.

That being said, I was excited to see the adaptability of some of the local critters, including the nesting habits of sparrows at the local water treatment plant, which itself looks like something out of a Bond film, and the sheer joy of some dogs playing at the water’s edge.

Enjoy.

: These guys ran back and forth ceaselessly, when they weren’t tackling each other

: Amazing little nests that hung suspended below an eaves on the local water treatment plant

: The nest was so high off the ground that it was difficult to get a clear shot

: Wish I had spent more time on these guys as this is the only photo that turned out…and this is why you carry your macro lens

: Like a military invasion, the geese flew by in flock after flock

: Take a hundred frames and maybe one will work out…yay

: Thousands of these guys swarmed the windows of the water treatment plant. Love the double shadow of the double-paned window

: Under a bridge, pigeons made quite the mess…this one was something of an outcast

: Love the colour of his neck plummage

: Despite his size, it was obvious this guy was quite young…and very very loud

: Looking for a little bit of food under some still unfoliaged shrubs

Okay…with this last batch, I promise that I have officially run out of photos of birds (hehehe) from my trip to Washington, DC…but they’re so beautiful.

: Boy, take a nap in a shrub for 2 minutes and all hell breaks loose

Spring hits Toronto (maybe?)

Took a walk earlier today with my camera, trying to shake the creative cobwebs. Got home just as the rains began, and feeling a whole lot better about things.

: Downtown Toronto is perpetually under construction, it seems, but the puddles help keep things beautiful

: Someone’s left a message for those of us fatigued by winter

: Clearing the throat to sing apparently includes fluffing out the feathers

: The only white flowers in a garden of purple and yellow

: As though making sure I’m okay, the sparrow peers around a twig

: I apparently made the grade as the sparrow focuses on other interests

: About the only bird that will stand up to a pigeon, the starling

: The skies begin a gentle song, one note at a time
